Nice job, Chris. I enjoy these reports from the margins, and the array of related links as well. Cool house too! (I saw pics of it somewhere.) Best of luck with a new book.
So much here, I shall limit my comment to agreement about the overwhelming cuteness of skunks. Happy to learn that their name and that of opossum are Native in origin, that is as it should be. Piss fox seems a bit harsh but then I’ve not had the full skunk experience….
That’s so funny—I just ordered Wish I Was Here from Blackwells last night! I went there to order another book that’s only available in UK currently, and it popped up as a recommendation. I was intrigued and added it to my stack.
And thanks for mentioning the directory. We’re getting there. Should be mostly up and running in another week or so.
Cleaning out Mom and Dad's over the past few months (she's 84, he's not far behind) as we got them ready to move into a residence, we ended up getting rid of a whole lot of things. And then, when I took 100+-year-old negatives into the Provincial Archives the chief archivist said they took just about anything, including papers related to the business Dad ran after he retired. Which of course we had tossed. I have not mentioned this to Dad, as he famously will hang onto anything even if his physcal state means he can no longer use it, and would use this as an excuse come the next cull.
As for Civil War (and speaking as a former photojournalist who once entertained the idea of hopping on a plane and getting to a war zone to try my hand at it), I felt a large part of the film was about how we hide from the moral chaos and evil surrounding us, both behind a lens and behind the barrel of a gun. A remarkable film, and I'm glad he threw us off balance by excising certain aspects of our current politics, a move that can help it speak to more than one side.
Agreed, I thought the approach he took in Civil War worked well to make the film much more political, in a deep way, than most critics have appreciated. I’ll have to give it a second viewing sometime. Good luck with your folks!

It’s an amazing book! Truly unique. I hope you enjoy it, and I’m excited to see your directory.

Oh yes, the AMOK catalog! Much fun reading though that years ago.
And this week's reading list looks great. As always, thank you!
Thanks, Lee!
Thoroughly enjoy reading about your travels with Lupe.
Thank you!
Thanks for reading! I bet the name was more affectionate than “piss fox” suggests 🦨🖤
