I am on break this week celebrating the end of 2020 with family, and getting ourselves re-acquainted with what real winter is like. I’ll be back next Sunday with a report on interstates as ecosystems, drones, geese, and other notes from the trip.

In the meantime, here is a great selection of Karl Bodmer’s mind-blowing paintings from his 1832-3 expedition through the Midwestern U.S. with Prince Maximilian von Wied, whose journals I have been reading this week.
